About The Book

Description

A raw and tender tale of restless Amanda—taking her from glittering metropolises to an island of madwomen Fresh out of prison, Amanda Aaltonen is a sharp-witted drifter who refuses to settle into the humble life reserved for destitute women. Europe’s streets beckon, and Amanda joins a French hot-air balloonist on his travels. But harsh experiences in Paris shake her balance, and upon returning, she is committed to Seili Island as incurably insane. On Seili, islanders, patients, and nurses live cut off from the world. But Amanda hasn’t come to conform. A battle begins—a struggle against surrender. When physical freedom is stripped away, the only option is to create a secret self.
